Spoke to Ruth last night, she is loving every minute of it, she was at the local hospital the other day with some of the kids with HIV, there's one doctor, working 7 days constantly , to look after all these kids queueing to see him, most have been waiting 5 hours!!!! They are going to put on a dance show while theyn are waiting next time, and Ruth and her friends are going to help out. Ruth forgot to take her camera lead, so she cant post photos until she comes home, but she is filling in the journal that Penny got for her, religiously. She is teaching kids ranging from pre-school up to the age of 12, most who have aids/hiv and in between that she is topping up her tan , she has to get up very early (which is killing her ) as school starts at 7am, she was in bed for 8pm the last couple of nights, .......Will keep you folks up-dated with news as it comes im................Big Hoggy, beside the pc in the spare room, Cumbernauld, for S.A.H.B. news ;D

How does the cost of a kingsize bottle of vodka compare to the average wage of the locals I wonder. Cheap for us may not be the same for them.

Ruth's e-mail for this week, hope ye like it folks, we're so proud o' oor wee lassie ;D Alreet, me again!
Things are a lot faster paced this week since both of the schools we are working in are back from their winter holidays, and we're actually living on one of the schools, so we get woken up by the pre-schoolers every morning! Jumbo School (not the one we're living at, the run down one) is absolutely mental. There are 140 kids there and the teachers are totally leaving us to it! We're swapping classes every week, but Hannah and I were chucked in at the deep end this week, we got the youngest class, there are 44 of them, and they hardly speak English. Mental! We've been trying to do some English, some sums and parts of the body with them. I can't wait to get the oldest class, they're so ambitious and fun We're going to do some fun things with them on a Friday when we're there and do a sort of Jumbo's Got Talent in the last week of us being there, so I think I'm doing a dance with the kids. Vhutshilo school is different, we're not teaching there, more doing drama and creative things. They're the ones who are putting on their HIV/AIDS play at the hospital clinic. We're also starting the youth groups this week, which involves some after-school care for younger kids and running a programme called LoveLife, where we go round secondary schools doing HIV Workshops and chatting to the young girls about teenage pregnancy etc. Yesterday, we went on the Venda tour and we got to see all the legendary things around here like the Sacred Forest and the Cursed Lake. Some cracking photos, you'll love them.
Anyway, speak soon, love you both xx

Seems like those kids want to learn - most kids over here in school would hardly be described as "ambitious"! They take everything for granted, their quality of life, their material possessions like their cell phones and Ipods and everything else. People who have less generally appreciate things more, I guess. Good luck to Ruth in her journey, Missus. Its so refreshing to see kids giving their time and effort to such a good cause.

I wonder if the person who pinched the said item has the right bits of computer kit to make it work. Probably swapped it for an ox and some goats.

As i said to Ruth, you give your time and energy, and there's always someone who will take advantage, that, im afraid, is life, sad though it is You know, the school received a grant of £10 Grand, the head of the school quickly pocketed £3grand to do up HER house, then needed £8 Grand to build a wall round the school, simple arithmatic shows there's a grand shortfall, she had the brass neck to ask Ruth and her friends to donate the other Grand !!!!!! dont know how you say fuckoff in African, but that is what they told her to do, that's ma gurl ;D

Just a thought. As long as Ruth and her friends are alright and come home safe, that is the main thing. Maybe they could get up a similar project on home territory - not quite such an adventure but needed just as much.

Dont get me wrong here folks, Ruth and her pals are not disheartened in any way, they're still loving it there. They managed to talk the head honcho into using a chicken-wire fence instead of the 8ft high brick wall she wanted. The money was to help the kids education and well being, not finance a new microwave and hoover etc etc for her own personal use, now it can be used to buy books, desks pencils, all the basics, really.Ruth and some of her friends have been giving lessons on Aids and Hiv to teenagers this week, daunting she says. but rewarding too, ah just love ma lassie ;D

I figure it'll take more than this to dishearten our Iron Lady - we have no way to really know what it's like there, until you here back first hand.
I hope the head teacher's new hoover belt snaps!!
