Hello,
In the summer of 1987 a friend and I had just finished our A-Levels. To celebrate, we set off from Newcastle with £50 each in our pockets on a hitch-hiking mission to the Isle of Arran on the west coast of Scotland. We made it quite a way into Scotland but became stranded on the edge of a small town who's name I can't remember. After several hours two guys pulled up in a red mini and we graciously jumped in.
The passenger introduced himself as Zal Cleminson from SAHB and his driver as Billy. They offered us beer and other light refreshments, to which we didn't say no. 'Zal' then proceeded to tell us stories of his days touring the world with SAHB. Either he had a very active imagination, or he was there in some other capacity or it really was Zal Cleminson. The stories were so vivid that he must have been there. It is something that has prayed on my mind ever since. Of course, I tell people the story but I never say that I have my doubts as to whether it was actually Zal..
Anyway, Zal and Billy went out of their way and took us to the ferry port in Ardrossan. The next ferry didn't leave for a while, so we headed to a bar where Zal continued with his stories. My friend and I repayed their kindness by buying them a couple of beers and we played some pool to pass the time.
We went on to have a great holiday and then returned to Newcastle to discover that we'd failed our A-Levels!
I would love to know if it was actually Zal we met that day, or just some crazy ex-roadie who liked to tell stories. Can anyone shed some light on this? If you're out there Zal, was it you? Do you remember your act of kindness to two young lads who were stranded in the middle of no-where in the summer of 1987?
Despite failing my A-Levels, I now manage a rock band by the name of Clear Blue Skies. Check them out at www.clearblueskies.com. I am also a promoter and I would love to bring SAHB to the North East (even though I see you are playing The Academy on 2/12/07). Feel free to contact me via CBSkies web site. You never know, I might even get to meet Zal again and shoot some pool for old times sake..
