"The Bedside Book of Physics" -seems that however much I read about Physics I still don't get it. But I keep tryin'...
"China: Empire of Living Symbols" - good book about the evolution of the Chinese script from Oracle bones thousands of years ago to today. Even has a part at the back about writing Chinese calligraphy. If only I could find my Chinese brush and ink block!

"And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks"
A very interesting book written by William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac in 1945 but not released until 2007. Great insight into the life of these two legendary men, and a good look at New York City in the mid forties - the booze, drugs and lifestyle of people on the edge.

Captive City, by Ovid Demaris The book has been out of print for some time now. If you can find it in a library or used book store please give it a read it will help you to understand how a beard (front) for the organization ended up in the White House (the current administration? say it ain't so grandpa), how unions took over most businesses, how it all started really. From the days of murder, bombings, arson, extortion and how those were used to take over practically every aspect of life. Where union dues end up and why. How the template of those early plans have become a worldwide enterprise. Crooked cops, federal judges, politicians, business leaders and their real names that you can actually confirm. Although I'm sure most of the records that this author accessed have disappeared or been destroyed (the powers that be don't like truth very much) there is a wealth of information in this book that will give you the shivers. Reading it won't change anything but at least you'll know what really happened in America and why it was spread across the entire planet. In the authors words "Chicago is a city in chains, the tie between mobster and politician is closer than anywhere else in the world including Sicily." But every one knows by now (european union anyone?) it has all been fashioned to operate just like the captive city.

Started reading Cold Granite by Stuart McBride. Set in Aberdeen and pretty good it is too A propos of nothing to do with what you're reading but prompted by Aberdeen......my cousin, Siobhan, is an archivist at Aberdeen University; some years ago, like 10, her brother Paul was taking his daughter, Maeve, up to Aberdeen to see Auntie Siobhan - Granny said to Maeve - oooo you'll maybe see the Northern Lights.....mid summer and all......visit goes ahead, Maeve thrilled at the train journey and all, had a wonderful time. Homecoming, Granny says to Maeve - did you see the Northern Lights, pet? Paul expostulates - NORTHERN LIGHTS!!!! ?? NORTHERN FECKIN LIGHTS? !!!! Midsummer's day in the sparkling silver granite city that is the Dallas of the north - around noon on said day, the sky turned ever darker, the heavens opened - so dark and drear that the street lights came on - NORTHERN LIGHTS - my fat arse - quoth cousin Paul - much to the astonishment of both his mother - she only asked - and his daughter, who was just delighted at the trip and seeing her auntie!!!! NORTHERN FECKIN LIGHTS - street lights more like!!!! ;D

electrons, protons, neutrons along with their quarks and gluons and stuff MG.
BTW finished the first four books in the A Song of Fire and Ice series - you know, from which Game of Thrones comes from. Very, very good. Haven't read much fiction in a few years so I was very pleased.
Also reading a lot about Physics. A little bit informed than before but still difficult to understand. As one scientist said, "If anyone ever tells you they understand quantum mechanics then they're lying".

I looked at those books too, but they seemed a little "thin" for what you pay for. The books are expensive, maybe they can be found cheaper on Amazon than in the shops. They are funny and, I think, well written and of course some a different to the tv programme. I'm catching up watching the series on dvd.

They're good, Penny, we saw the first one televised ages after it was initially screened as we have ordinary terrestrial tv and we both enjoyed it - hence the books - you must have them when I eventually get through more than one!!
