Hello Sahbsters!! As I will be having a 'big' birthday this year, I was going to ask Mr. H-R for a new sound system. He bought me a record/cd player about 20 years ago, it still works but the sound is rather tinny (Ive never told him obv, that would be rude). Now I think the time has come to ask for a CD/mp3 player with a good sound (lots of bass) and maybe (if such a thing still exists) a tuner (there was one on my old sound system about 30 years ago!!). It needs to be fairly small as I will have to keep it in the kitchen. Ive got no idea where to start when it comes to what the best thing would be to get (I have looked in Richer Sounds, but got confused) and was wondering if any of the Sahbsters had any ideas that would help me choose something. Thanks.

(make sure you HEAR it before buying!) www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Elta_4261_Kitchen_Radio_with_Cd_Player_AUX_i125_1844_0.htmAre you using an MP3 player, Penny?

Ginnies right get the most bang for your buck(or pound err euro) Do u want something to cook by or to knock the feathers off the peacocks? What I did in the bathroom was put in my old computer speakers - then we just plug in our mp3 players into it. Sounds pretty good with the subwoofer going. You can buy really decent computer speakers for under $100. They're powered and give you great sound.

I want something to knock the feathers off the peacocks Vic!! Thanks for the link Ginnie, I will have a look at it later and thanks for the advice about the computer speakers. The kitchen cd player/radio looks a good option, Ginnie, but not really what I was after.

There are several high quality one box systems. What hi fi magazine is a good place to start looking depending on budget.Yamaha make a decent range from about £180 plus speakers I think;-

Thanks for the info ZZW, I will have a look for the mag tomorrow, the system you have shown is exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of, hopefully use of headphones would be included in it too. I love my music, my husband hates it!! (He's more of an opera person)

That looks fantastic! The only thing you'd have to worry about is "fitting" in the stereo to look good in your kitchen. Seems like a perfect product for you.

All of the suggestions so far are great. I know a little about guitar amplification but not much about home stereo (I have a portable CD player from the 80s). I listen to music now mostly on my laptop. Have fun shopping Penny and a Big Happy Birthday to you!

I like the expression 'the most bang for your buck' and have just thought of another instance where it may be of use to me!!

Ahem!!
You could do worse than Google and look into the B & W Zeppelin (they also do a Zeppelin Mini).......I don't see speakers being ideal in the kitchen and you'd probably want to take it to Kington too........and Darling Man has applied considerable research into this for you - no pressure!!!!

Oh bless him, thanks DM!! I will be giving this a look. It is to leave in Kington as I have killed the CD player up there completely dead. The radio bit works, but Kington being in the arse end of no where (you know what I mean, Colin!) there is b ugger all in the way of a signal. This looks great! Peterb has been doing research on ebay as well. I'm so lucky!! Have had a look at this system and the mini one, but unfortunately, they are i-pod/i-phone compatible and Ive got an MP3 player, so that wouldn't work. Onwards and upwards, will keep looking. Thanks again Colin.

Thanks again Colin. If DM looked into the prerequisites for this machine - all the boxes will have been ticked - probably even the "will work on Kington 1950's electrickery" box!!!!! Bless the Bard of Barrow for searching on ebay too - however - this upcoming birthday is a landmark decade change and I absolutely INSIST that only the best (brand new, store bought, no red sticker or ex-display) will do - I'm sure your Peter will understand - I don't want to have to explain it to him........
