Hi All,
I've only recently been introduced to the music of Alex Harvey.
Can anyone recommend a top 3 essential albums for a newbie to get started with?
Thanks

Hi Coz and welcome to the forum - I would suggest, perhaps, that you start at the start, with Framed and move along the albums in the same order as they were released, might give you an even better flavour of how the band grew......the greatest of pities that you never did and never will see them play live (with Alex), it all made so much more sense when you could see the theatrics and the humour, just start at the start

So buy Framed, Next and The Impossible Dream...

I don't think you could do him justice with just 3 albums. The ones people have recommended are all great, but it would be a shame to start so late or end so early, you'd miss much more than half his output. I'd suggest "Considering the Situation", which includes a cd of tracks from the first few SAHB albums and another cd of stuff from the 60s. It will give you a much better idea of his scope than SAHB albums alone. Crucially it doesn't include anything from the 1964 album "The Blues", nor does it include anything from after "Tomorrow Belongs to Me". The Blues doesn't seem to have ever been reissued, which is a real shame. The songs are not original, but the delivery is. Good luck finding it. You asked for 3, so I'd also suggest either one of the Soul Band Recordings and "SAHB Stories", or "Rock Drill", or The Mafia Stole My Guitar". The live album is also quite essential. Hmm, that's more than 3 and there's still a lot missing. Start at the beginning and work through to the end. Three albums isn't going to do it.

Hey, if you listen to the first three albums and you like what you hear, you're gonna buy the rest of them! There are no duds on those three. Alternately, if you listen to them, and don't like SAHB that much, you don't need to buy any more. I'd politely suggest that SAHB Stories, Rock Drill and Mafia Stole My Guitar are not as good as Framed, Next and Impossible Dream.

Welcome back Mampam!
Good conclusion to your suggestions!! Start at the start!!
I agree there is an awful lot more to Alex than just the SAHB work, personally, I think you have to get into SAHB first, in order to better understand and appreciate Alex.
Go fo it Coz - start at the start - or as SAHBsters say.....in the beginning........
I'd be interested to know how you got introduced to Alex's music, Coz.

Welcome Coz, you dont really say wether it was S.A.H.B. or Alex you newly got into, if it's S.A.H.B. then get yor hands on Framed, then you'll be hooked, then take it album by album and watch the band grow from strength to strength, and Alexs ideas blossom, if it's Alex your talking about, then Considering the Situation would be a good start .

That's the best list we've ever had on here - not that we've had many - and it'll save me asking Darling Man or checking the covers to decide, if I HAD to pick three to start with, which would they be...........my advice is still, start at the start....I'd rather hoped Coz would've been back to collate all this valuable information........

I agree with getting the first 3 to start. Framed, Next, Impossible Dream.
The whole catalogue is loaded with great stuff... if you like the first three you'll surely get to the rest. The pre & post SAHB stuff is great, but something really very special happenned with SAHB.

I'm sure you'll remember TK what it was like way back when - how many albums did you buy because you heard one really good song on the radio - and the rest of the album was a dud?
Today, you can just go on YouTube and "preview" what you want to hear or even convert the videos to MP3's... I wish we had it back in the seventies before I bought Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow or The Faces live album Coast to Coast...

... there should be a SAHB boxset, surely! BOXSET !!! with everything to go!! Oops might I add that, start at the start it wont be long before you get hooked and wind up getting the rest.and without having to wait like most of us did back in the day.Although there was nothing like the excitement of hearing about a new release. I get that rush when I hear other stuff i have on vinyl gets released on CD. (and by the way , there is lots of "unofficial" stuff about that I am sure these great people wouldn't mind letting loose of once we get to know you a bit
