Yep, Bob Harris is a great bloke. If I had to watch my words each time I made a little joke, I would spend half my life watching every word I said. When Derek Wadsworth interviewed Alex, Derek said "Ted Nugent is going deaf." Alex replied, "Good. I don't wanna f**k**g listen to him." Do you see my point Catherine? There really is no need to get so upset over such a tiny joke!
Bob is into American Country Rock and singer-songwriters like Clifford T. Ward (one of the best songwriters ever). It was amusing watching Bob interview Alex in 1975 and he was smoking his head off, which certainly wouldn't be allowed on TV these days! The BBC probably still have the SAHB without Alex footage.

My dear Roadworm, I do know a little joke when I see one and was far from upset by your post - to the degree that I made a joke, emphasised by smileys, that Bob should be the NEXT king.
I'm just delighted that he took the time out to give me his additon to the introduction of Alex at the Palace; thereafter, to say "yes please" to pics and update and to thank us for giving him the opportunity to contribute to the weekend.
I'd be as well to say it myself, save anybody else the bother........you'd know if I was "upset"

More importantly, Bob has been fighting prostate cancer for a few years now, and seems to be winning, he shaped my musical tastes from early teens, introducing me to bands I would never have heard of, (John Peel's late radio show was also involved), the Old Grey Whistle Test was a source of inspiration to me and many others, a lot of bands owe him an immense debt of gratitude for making their music accessible.
Long live Bob! (and, yes, he really is that nice a chap).

Sorry Catherine, I thought you were upset because you used red text (red for rage!!!??). You can tell I'm not used to Internet forums, can't you? It's so easy for me to misinterpret what people are writing when I can't see their eyes! Sorry to hear that Bob is suffering from prostate cancer.
I used to listen to John Peel a lot throughout the late 70s, but he never seemed to like SAHB, which always puzzled me a bit. I thought SAHB would have been precisely the kind of band he would have championed - it's a real mystery. Also, does anyone know why Alex/SAHB weren't on those "Best Scottish Album In The World" CD compilations?

No problem, Roadworm.....this is pink text!!!This is red!!! ;DI tend to favour pink because in olden days the forum was set to default to red text on a black screen, we all had trouble reading it and many a brow was furrowed and spectacle worn!! Pink was about the lightest and most legible colour to change it to - so that's pretty much why I do. It could, of course, be just because I'm a girl......

Can I start a new thread about water charges? This is something I feel strongly about. Nobody should have to pay £400 a year for water. It really is taking the pissh!

Also, does anyone know why Alex/SAHB weren't on those "Best Scottish Album In The World" CD compilations? The first time I heard SAHB was on the John Peel show, I think in late '72 when he presented "BBC radio 1 top gear", he seemed so intent on discovering new bands that as soon as a band became moderately popular he would stop playing them, maybe he thought his work was done! In fact, had it not been for John Peel and Bob Harris, I doubt I would have heard of SAHB at all, at least until they did Delilah on TOTP, and I'm not sure that would have enamored them to me!.

Am I the only SAHB fan who believes that "Delilah" did more harm than good to SAHB's reputation? I think not. The follow-up single, "Runaway", made me want to put my fist through the wall. Singles are supposed to represent a band, and if you give people a bad first impression then it will stay with them forever. What were their record label thinking??!!!
I'm surprised that "Swampsnake" wasn't put out as a single, or how about "Soul In Chains"? No singles were released from "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" (except as B-sides). "Action Strasse" would have made a great single as well, in my opinion.

I realize that Alex wanted to expand people's musical horizons though. I think SAHB's first three albums are as good as anybody's in the music business (excepting my the Beatles).

Seemed to me, at the time, that SAHB was just not a commercial singles in the charts type band; they toured and made albums, the best ways at the time for a band to generate income.
Delilah just made me cringe and Chris has always said that it was the record company that released it and then told the band - who then had to fly home from touring the USA to appear on Top of the Pops........bit of a cringe at the time but very funny now ;D

"Nightmare City" always makes me smile and would have made a really funny single - it's quite catchy too, but I'm not sure if Noel Edmonds or Tony Blackburn would have played it. The lyrics are VERY strange - "Bone picking jellyfish walking on the streets below." Reminds me of Captain Beefheart's "Bat Chain Puller."

The Old Grey Whistle Test was great television and I got into it when I was able to watch (not working or what have you) on Sunday nights at 10 or 11pm, 1972 to 1974. Here is an Alex interview:
