first of all i would like to thank ROADWORM for passing this amazing recording onto all the sahbsters, It is now ready to be shared for free !!!!. Anyone who would like a copy of this can pm me and i'll give them my address, all you need to do is send me a stamped S.A.E. and two good quality blank cd's, and i will get these back to you as soon as i can. ;D. Totally amazed a 48 year old recording just surfaced and for the age of it, the sound quality is really good. Hoping to get a couple of nice soulband pictures, and get some artwork sorted for it, the bigger the pictures are the better. Karma to ya roadworm yer a top man. yo ho ho ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nice one TK. As you say, the sound quality is really good for a 48 year old recording, and I'm sure the fans will be surprised that it actually sounds much better than many SAHB bootleg tapes from the 70s.

There is actually an earlier Soulband recording made in Glasgow in 1959. It was cut onto an acetate in Carlisle at the time and I've heard some tracks from it. I don't own the disc, but Alex sounds very bluesy and inexperienced (well, he was only 24). The tracks are "Backwater Blues", "New Orleans", "Tequila" and 3 others I'm trying to remember. I heard excerpts from it about 15 years ago. Amazing recording. I'd love to hear it again!!!

Thanks Roadworm and T.K....Superb recording that everyone on here should have. Given Polydor used another band for the album...Is this the only recording of the 'actual' Soul Band?

The Soulband changed line-ups so many times between 1959 and 1965 that it's difficult to say what is the 'actual' Soulband. The guys who played on the Polydor album were Billy Sadler (drums), Ian Hines (electric piano), Bobby Thompson (bass), George Carmichael (saxophone) and Robert Nimmo (guitar). They also played on "What's Wrong With Me, Baby?" and "Reelin' & Rockin'."
The guys who played on the majority of tracks on the Bear Family CD were George McGowan (drums), Jimmie Grimes (bass), Bill Patrick (saxophone) and Robert Nimmo (guitar). This album was originally to have been released by Polydor in 1965 under the title "Alex Harvey And His Soulband...Continued", but there was a feud at the record company and it never got put out until 1999 when Bear Family obtained the licence.
God knows who played on the 1965 Polydor single "Ain't That Just Too Bad/My Kind Of Love."
The two tracks "Jailhouse Rock" and "Going Down To Birmingham" by the Soulband (from the "Teenage A Go Go" CD) were recorded live at the Top Ten Club Hamburg in 1964. Once again, I don't know what the line-up of the band was. These ARE genuine live recordings .

You may be interested to know that band leader Mike McKenzie conducted Alex's recording of "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot." Mike McKenzie was disabled and he conducted the choir and strings in the studio from his wheelchair. The "Canoe Song" was originally sung by Paul Robeson in the film "Sanders Of The River."

That would be great but I live in Lanzarote! Parcels tend not to arrive! Thank you anyway.
I met the band, including Alex Harvey, when I was about thirteen. I didn't think too much about it, as I was used to seeing them around my aunt's house. I was cool and didn't know it!

I don't know how to send a pm, on this site! It would be wonderful to be able to hear my cousin playing. Of course, I heard him, quite often, as he jammed with the band, at my aunt's house.

Billy Sadler was my father - he passed in 1993 - i had a tape recording of Alex Harvey that he was the drummer on.
Any way to put me in touch with something that he was involved in would be amazing as that tape, as much as it was worth to me, has been lost.
Hope everyone has enjoyed the music.

Hi Dan, I think you may have come to the very place where a certain Mighty Brave Wise Pirate Warrior Chief (Tomahawk Kid) is just the fellow to contact.....you don't have to do anything, he'll read this and come to you I hope (am fairly sure) that we can restore that long lost recording with your Dad drumming
