Right Folks,
We've all played a SAHB record and we have all played a SAHB CD, but has anyone noticed anything different between the two?
I'm certain some things have been 'moved around' on the first 2 lps - Anyone in the know?

Just before someone else says it...I know one is black and 12'' and the other is silver and 4'' - I looked it up on Wikipedia " I would be very careful when typing "black and 12"" into any search engine!

Interesting question that needs investigating.

Reason i brought this one up is, i used to work for a charity...and the people i sold records to always held the view that vinyl was superior to cd. There is also that old thing about 'The Sex Pistols' records sounding different to the CD....

The Bowie 2cd anniversary editions are missing count-ins and bits and bobs. Best Bowie CD's are the the ones with a picture of him on the spine...Ziggy is restored to the same as the lp.

I play both-there are still certain recordings not on CD but I believe records have a wider range and some more "thump" I prefer listening to "progressive" rock on CD because of no interruptions and because most i listen to are keyboard orientated, which seems to sound finer on CD-that goes for classical as well- Jazz; gotta be on vinyl
There are differences-2 I can recall is that I have a copy of Abby Road sans "Maggie May" & a copy of Eric Burdon Band "Stop" which doesn't have "Be Mine"

Hi Victor55, I know, a remarkable amount of stuff is only available on vinyl...I buy the records when i can afford them and rip them to a CD. That way the LP stays in good condition On the artwork front an LP is certainly more majestic...but CD's are easier to store. Did you have 'Let it Be' minus 'Maggie May'...? I've been collecting Beatles since i was 14 and have never heard of that before - Could be worth a lot of money now. What do you think of the 2009 box sets?

Analogue vs digital debate, analogue (i.e. vinyl) has a much warmer rich sound to it, more realistic to the way the artist recorded it, CD has improved greatly over the years, first with HDCD and then SACD, remastering from the original analogue tapes gives a much better sound than just copying the LP's which is what record labels did originally, I have spent a small fortune on valve driven DAC's (digital to analogue converters) and tube buffers/amps to recreate that analogue sound, why don't you buy vinyl I hear you ask, well, a lot of recordings are not available in that format anymore, they also damage easier and wear out with use, plus there's the storage issue. I have found that the copying of CD's removes the high and low frequencies so on playback you don't get the full sound of the recording due to compression, (something radio stations use as well to prevent volume spikes). You also get this with downloaded music. I must say that the recently issued Beatles and Pink Floyd re-masters are a great improvement over the original releases on CD due to the full sound spectrum being available. On "Dark Side of The Moon" you can even hear the faint sound of the Beatles in the background on "Eclipse", something only previously heard on high end vinyl systems.

PS- I miss album art and liner notes I agree with this Vic, almost need a magnifying glass for stupid cd booklet thingys - Dont get me started on trying to read the lyrics or anything really in them with the colours that are used sometimes. Also miss the wording that is sometimes round the label of a record too!

Sadly I threw out most of my vinyl collection a few years ago except for Bowie (every record from 1967 to 1987), Beatles (every one I think - Canadian versions) , Neil Young (every record to 1986) and the Rolling Stones.
This Christmas I got my son a turntable and gave him all my Beatle and Bowie records, plus the first Deftones album (his favourite band). Then I decided to fix up my old turntable - the belt had disintegrated in my hands so I ordered one for like $9 shipped from the U.K. and bought a pre-amp to hook it up to my home theatre system. As for the sound, I'm a bit divided. I don't think a home theatre system is the best way to play vinyl and I don't have my old stereo right now.
BTW started sloooowly building up an LP collection again... not that I'll buy that many. All I have right now is:
Bowie - David Live Stars on Long Play and "24 Dynamic Hits, Original Artists" ;D

I agree with Sahbotage-the remasters are remarkable-Sometimes i think Ringo is hiding out in one my speakers-but I can't get that crazy anymore because of cost and have only purchased certain recordings on SACD- Here's a funny twist- I sometimes fall asleep listening to CDs and tapes(can't ferget those) but never do with Lp's- the thought of my stylus cracking against the label makes me crazy... besides I can use the exercise ;D.

Penny, I have also noticed that odd colours are used in cd booklets...can't see the writing behind all the art. I do prefer lp art and inserts...Sometimes you get a poster too. There are often some quite funny things etched around the paper label. (Think this was a signature of some kind)
Sahbotage, MP3's are very poor but WAV or EAC CD rips are close to perfect. I still cannot get my head around buying an MP3...I just buy the CD and store it on my laptop. You have a cool system set up, must've cost you thousands. Someone gave me an old 1970's mixing desk, which i passed on to a friend who does music...It needs some valves replaced and i cannot track them down.
Victor55...The Beatles remasters from 2009 are superb, you can hear every tiny sound, as Sahbotage says, CD's are improving all the time and this set proves that - Abbey Road are supposed to have spent enormous amounts of money on the technology they now use to remaster old recordings. Worth every penny though.
Ginnie, Who sang the original of 'Knock On Wood' from 'David Live' ?

Chester, Ah yes, posters and lyric sheets, wouldn't get decent ones with your poxy cd's! Ive still got a stencil of a clenched fist that came with the Tom Robinson Band's album 'Power In The Darkness'. It had strict instructions not to use it on public property. Lol. My girls told me that they had seen it sprayed on the lockers in their school....wonder if its still there.

I think Tom was one of the first openly gay singers, whilst others were still trying to hide their true sexuality, and in the late seventies gay-bashing was still prevalent so it was a brave thing to do.
