.. and surrounding area when it's pissing down with rain.
Maybe it won't be as dreich by then but my reason for asking is my daughter has booked herself and her chap into a hotel up in Howwood (you guys probably know it) for a week, starting on the 28th. She's always wanted to visit Scotland and this will be her first visit and she's asking me what there is to do up there. They have no plans and the week is a blank page at the moment, so any suggestions for days out, things to do, that might not be immediately obvious would be much appreciated.

Jump onboard the city tour buses, see the historical Glasgow. Get the buses at George Square, just across from the city chambers, and outside Queen St Station.

Thanks for your help guys. She already has the usual 'touristy' type information and was looking for other recommendations of things that might be a little off the radar. She's booked up to do some sea kayaking and surfing over on the east side. Is Edinburgh still a bit of a no go zone for traffic like it was last time I drove through there?

If she has a smart phone ask her to download a Glasgow travel guide App. Most are superb and full of info maps and includes a where you are and how to get to.... feature. And its free too.

It very much depends on what they're into but the tour bus gets most of it under your belt in a relatively short time and is fairly comprehensive and doesn't take all that long - you can hop on and off, too, if something in particular interests you.
If they're driving, my favourite for a day out would be to Ayrshire - Rabbie Burns' cottage is cute; The Auld Kirk & The Brig are there too, from the poem Tam O'Shanter - very atmospheric where the witches danced and a drunken Tam, impressed by one young witch wearing only a short shirt (or simmet/vest) leapt higher than the others and they danced around the flames - he cried out "Weel done Cutty Sark"!!! (well done, short shirt), the firelight snuffed out and the witches gave chase - Tam headed for the bridge - witches can't cross running water - he only just made it - but Cutty Sark caught hold of Meg, the gray mare's tail - poor old Meg was left "wi' bare a stump". Tam O'Shanter's cottage is just down the road from Culzean, in Kirkoswald, where there is a small tapestry, which one way up, is Tam's wife smiling, the other way up, she doesn't look so happy!! Also from the poem, Tam's wife was not best pleased at him not being home and it was late, he'd obviously got pished, so the poem goes on to tell us that Tam's wife was "gatherin' her brows, like gatherin' storm and nursing her wrath - to keep it warm" - ALL women have done that!!!!
It's this witch who is both the name and the figurehead on the sailing ship "Cutty Sark" - they are still researching to try and find out why.
Sorry, too much information there - then on to Culzean Castle - the most beautiful place, countryside and seaside meet in a place of perfection. But I guess the young folks won't be into that.

.. and surrounding area when it's pissing down with rain. You just do as we did, put up your hood and enjoy - you're on holiday!!
We're waterproof - otherwise, we'd drown in the bath!!! I hope they have a brilliant time, no matter what they choose to do - they may even fall in love with God's own country and want to go back!
Tomahawk Kid's teepee does a great line in coffee and doughnuts!!!
