I'm hoping this thread will last a lonnnnng time...
My 16yr old daughter expressed interest in learning how to play guitar. Of course I am aware that 90% of people who do this lose their interest in the first year, but I went out and bought her a guitar anyways and have started to give her lessons. I'm not a professional teacher but I figure I can guide her to the point to where her own artistic and musical sensibilities take over.
First thing - I know I have to get her fingers loosened up and flexible, and to get her calluses built up. So a few simple exercises for her to practice every day is essential. I don't want to overload her with the names of notes and all that but it will come. I'll introduce some half or full chords next week. Maybe G and D.
One thing I want to stress to her is that there is only 12 notes in the world and most music is created using just those twelve and for her to be able to take what seems like very little but if you're creative you can make a hell of a lot of music. Most rock songs only use three or four chords anyways...
I'll give her a few simple things that sound great, like some blues chords using two strings in A, E, and D where she only has to play a max of three notes on one string.
I've stressed to her that she MUST practice every day even if its only for ten minutes to get her fingers nimble.
If there are any teachers out there and can give me some advice, I'm all ears.
I'll record her progress on this thread.
Here's her guitar, a budget Epiphone, but it plays well and stays in tune:
