I know the football game was on during the middle of the night in the UK but wondering if anyone caught The Who during the halftime show, and what you thought.
I'm a long standing Who fan. It's my opinion they've produced some of the best music ever made...but for me, it was painful to watch. I've got to give 'em props for giving it a go, but it sure left me with mixed emotions.

Will just copy what I wrote on the Monster Magnet forum about the same thing...
Was expecting them to be great but I was really, really disappointed with it :/ they've always sounded great, tight as anything in the past on anything I've seen them on, but I thought Townshend in particular was awful...though the mix probably highlighted this a lot as the vocs were far too high and dry as feck, so not very forgiving...but didn't think his guitar work was very good either. Each to their own obviously, maybe I was still on a high after the Groundhogs gig and expected too much, ha! Sounded to me like not a lot of thought had gone into the song transitions either, a bit thrown together without much thought.

I didn't watch the football but caught the Who's act... Yeah, they were pretty messy eh? I was wonderin' if they still had it but the show was disappointing. The last time I saw them live on TV was at the 9/11 Memorial where they were the highlight of the evening, but last night... Roger is really straining to hit the notes now - I was always wondering how long he could keep it up. Seems to be in decline now. And Pete - boy, that was messy. Pete and Keith Richards are on about the same level now - they are like a parody of them former selves, and the notes aren't there. Jimmy Page went that way too, but at last April's re-union was superb - maybe it was all the rehearsing he put in. As for Pete's sound - his guitar would be too loud, then soft, then loud... Maybe in his old age he gets his pedals mixed up? He should just stick to one distortion pedal anyway IMHO. Did you notice that sometimes when he did that swinging arm routine that he missed some chords? The songs didn't segue really well, but I can understand that. They didn't have much time to try to fit them all in such a short set. BUT - compare that with the way they segued all of Tommy together so masterfully back in the day. I still think they do a better job than the Stones though.

I have seen The Who twice in the last few years and each time they blew me away. Okay there is only Roger and Pete left but they are still amazing, Yeah Roger can't hit the notes from nearly 49 years ago, who could? I did feel that at the Superbowl show they sounded bad when Pete tried to improvise. Pete and Rog cannot do harmonies anymore but when they sing their own parts they aren't too bad. I find that Roger adapts his vocal limitations well and pulls it off in the main.

I saw the whole thing(its a cultural thing) and I thought it was great that they still have the energy to go out there, However- I think the problem was that most of that was tape except for Roger and Petes guitar which is why it sounded odd and why Pete got caught up between himself and what was taped. You dont really thing that Roger hit the high scream at the end of the set when it all went dim?
Besides, on this I might be wrong but were those real cymbals the drummer had or just some lighting effect?-I dont think he was really playing-
also in a large stadium like that the synchronization was too perfect between instruments and live feed; -no lag- WTF??

I don't think any of it was taped... And now that I'm looking at it a second time, I'm thinking it wasn't that bad...

I'm afraid I saw it too; live stadium never sounds good in my opinion - but hey!!! It's still THE 'OO

No way the 4 of them were playing together-just look at Pete trying to get his timing together- either that or their stage monitoring equipment wasnt working right

Can't watch the Who now, ever since Pete Townsend appeared on stage dressed as Pervy Uncle Ernie from Tommy just after his being put on the sex offenders register, can't listen to Gary Glitter either.
