Been checkin out some stuff I aint listened to for AGES & a BIG favourite of mine is Todd Rundgren. Todd took over & saved Bat out of hell & produced many bands & is also a fantastic writer, singer, arranger,producer,guitarist....etc etc Check out Todds' solo stuff or with his band Utopia. I had the great pleasure of playing some percussion with Todd at the Manchester Academy in the mid 90's on the TR-i tour. So if anybody has a bootleg of that gig the percussion is ME!! Check him out........Awesome Theese songs are from an album called "Nearly Human"...check it out And here's the song I featured on with Todd in Manchester (not this version) "I don't wanna work..I wanna bang on the drum all day!

Todd is a man of many, many talents. If you like to read, as I do, books on rock'n roll, his name comes up all the time - not just as a singer/songwriter but largely in context to his production work with other musicians - early Sparks, New York Dolls, Badfinger, Grand Funk Railroad, Hall & Oates, Ian and Sylvia, Meat Loaf, Patti Smith, Shaun Cassidy, The Tubes, Tom Robinson Band, XTC, Bad Religion, Cheap Trick, The Hello People, Hiroshi Takano, Bourgeois Tagg, 12 Rods, The Pursuit of Happiness, The Psychedelic Furs, Steve Hillage, The Band, The American Dream, and many others.
One night in 1974, about 4 a.m in the morning, after everyone had gone home or to sleep, the radio was on and I heard this long piece of music. It was a combination of ELP/Yes styles. Wonderful. I really wanted this record. The only thing I caught the DJ saying about it was "Utopia". The next day I went to the record store and asked for Utopia. He told me that there were two bands with a song Utopia - one was Graham Central Station, and the other one was Todd Rundgren's Utopia. Luckily, I picked the right album. What was cool too is that the album was over an hour long, though it wasn't a double album. Somehow Todd managed to fit 30 minutes per side. I guess the spirals were closer together or something. It took me awhile to connect Todd with "Hello Its Me" and his earlier stuff, because his "new" material was so different.
Here is the song Utopia:

Great choices, Sarge and Ginnie! I can see what you mean Ginnie, your track was very different to Sarges choices. (I actually like Ginnie's the best, sorry, Sarge. )

The wifey was a big fan of Todd's back in the day and had most of his stuff on vinyl. His music seemed to cross into many genres without him selling himself out along the way. It's a bit slushy but I really like this song, which was later covered by those England Dan fellows and annoyingly gets far more airplay than the original
