My first was with Hazel O'Connor but when I come to think of it, there have been so many of those orgasmic wailing moments. The sax during Money by The Floyd was a memorable one. What was your own personal favorite? The first one to mention Bob Holness knocking one out on Baker Street gets a virtual chinning

The sax in the 2nd part of Springsteen's Jungleland has always spoken to me. It's not flashy nor technically impressive, but in the context of the song it's very soulful and emotional. My favorite old-school sax player was Gene Ammons (RIP) and my favorite current sax player is Carl "Safe Sax" Ferris who performs regularly on Fremont Street in Vegas. Check him out at www.safe-sax.com/

You won't believe this but... I love the sax that Bowie plays on the Diamond Dogs album - it sounds slightly out of tune, but it fits the decadence and sound of that record perfectly. Fast forward to 3:41 of "Sweet Thing" and you'll hear what I mean:

The sax in rock done tastefully can be a wonderful sound......in moderation.
Us and them by floyd is a great "breathy example",Dick Parry very underrated.
David Sanborns soloing on "DAVID LIVE" is another showcase.
But my favourite saxophonist of all time is MY DAD He started out at 16 years old playing Trad jazz around the US military bases. Gradually as time went by he played in swing bands eventually sharing a stage with the likes of Shirley Bassey,Matt Monroe and Jack Parnell.
Along the way he rubbed shoulders with Noddy Holder ,tony Iommi ,Dave Greenslade and Roy Wood .
He also managed to survive the Birmingham Pub Bombings......The band just left one club to another and played in another amid the sound of sirens.
He continued honking his horn right up until 3 weeks before he passed away 3 years ago
A 60+ Year career.............doing something he loved.
I have to look no further for my hero.

That's the guy.. I forgot his name... amazing saxophonist, playing on some timeless classics.. great stuff. I somehow missed the story about your father first time around Trench. Thanks for sharing those memories. You're obviously very proud of your father and deservedly so.

Everything the coolest guy ever, Andy Mackay of Roxy, played. Especially the treated solo on "Pyjamarama" (original Island single). I remember the first time I heard it, back in 1973, it was the most amazing/weirdest sound ever...memories eh?
