Black Sabbath
Up until I was thirteen years old, my musical intake was purely from AM radio. Of course that would include the Beatles, Stones and the like but also excluded a lot of music...
So in 1971 I inherited about twenty albums from my older brother. The reason why he gave them to me was because he had a couple of pet raccoons that shit all over the album covers so he didn't want them any more. What is this stuff? Hmmm... lets see... Black Sabbath - Master of Reality? Who are these guys... I put it on the turntable and was awestruck. I'd never heard anything like this before. I must have played it hundreds of times on the awful sounding stereo, but I became instantly a Black Sabbath fan and have remained so ever since. I never had another Black Sabbath album until three years later when I starting working and had money to buy albums. I bought the first album, Black Sabbath, then Vol. IV. My friends had Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath so I heard them all the time too. At 16, I wanted to be in a band, but because I had severely injured my left hand - lots of nerve and tendon damage, I didn't know if I could so I thought bass would be easier. Then I read that Tony Iommi had cut the finger tips off two of his fingers and used plastic tips to help him play the guitar. He detuned the strings down to D (thats where Heavy Metal gets its deeper sound) so it would be easier to play the notes. So I started playing guitar as well as bass. If I was smarter, I would have learned to play it left handed so that my right hand would be my fingering hand but the thought never occurred to me at the time! Too late now to change...
AT 6:48 is the Birth of Heavy Metal !

Nice thread Ginnie. I can't decide what band to write about so I will write about one Christmas when my brother and I had the following albums as presents.
The Rolling Stones - Get Stoned ELO - Out of the Blue Queen - A Night at the Opera oh and The Muppet Show album
At the time we didn't have many albums so the few we had got plenty of air time.
I remember the different sounds and styles of Get Stoned and how amazing hearing tracks like Mother's Little Helper, Sympathy For the Devil and She's a Rainbow. I learnt all the songs word perfect in a short space of time.
As for Out of the Blue we had a cassette of A New World Record and I loved that but to have this fantastic double album with its posters and model spaceship well that was just Rock n Roll. The songs were so well written, not too pop or hard on the ear and the production was amazing. I remember playing air cello for the first time to Concerto For A Rainy Day.
A Night at the Opera Well again the different styles blew me away. The aggression of Death on Two Legs with the intro that used to scare the pants off me and the layered vocal effects of the Prophets Song, with its explosive ending meant that this was an album to be played when dad was out......and only when dad was out. It had its softer moments (Love of My Life, 39) and even its quirky moments (Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon) so all in all a fantastic musical education.
Oh yes and there was The Muppet Show Album

I seem to remember The Dave Clark Five (supported by The Ivy League and The Lancastrians) being the first 'proper' gig that I went to at the Winter Gardens theatre in Morecambe.
Three, sometimes four, chart bands on the same bill AND TWO SHOWS ON A SUNDAY!!!
Those really were the days.

Ten Years After. The album Ssssh. My brother had this album and hardly ever played it, i heard it one of the rare times he had it on and fell in love with it, i played and played until the grooves ran smooth, i was 11 at the time. Years and years later i found the album in an old record shop and bought it, still love it after all these years.

Most of my musical education came from Stephen my brother, he is 4 years older than me and was forever getting me into bands. But I would say my biggest musical moments came from a local shop:
When I was about 14, I started to hang around a local record store called 33 1/3 Records. The owners were also part of a band. The band used to practice in the top floor of the shop, Ive never seen so many egg cartons. It was amazing watching them practice, they played songs by King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Zappa etc.
The music played in the shop was similar and they got me into those acts as well as the likes of Wishbone Ash, John Wetton, Weather Report, Camel plus loads more. I learnt how to listen to the individual instruments and not just the songs. I often wonder what ever happened to them all.

Snap Pete....we had a shop just like that one right next to us, it was (n still is) called Lost Chord. Was a great place for gettin the "unobtainable" n had a really wide mix o people who came from all over to buy from it. Only problem was it had the most unpredictable openin hours ever This is it Pete It's a west end landmark n it's had that paint job (er most likely touched up from the original of course) since I was 14. I remember it bein painted, I was absolutely facinated watchin it bein done. Don't know who is responsible for the art......maybe sumone here does? Er I've just noticed it's no called Lost Chord anymore!.....awwww ...no hang on....the eyesight has switched on.....it's still called Lost Chord wayyyheyyyy ;D

Don't kno about the license, maybe we should give them a call, but goin by the window display I'd guess they mite not be home.
