Speaking of the Greatest Guitar Players of all time; there are only a handful that you can instantly recognize, they have their own distinct "signature" to their style/ sound/inflection-which I guess makes them the Greatest of all time, I believe ?
Heres who I can think of: In no particular order (BTW I think this a non-offensive list)
Zal Hendrix George Harrison Brian May Leslie West Alvin Lee Trower John Du Cann Malmstein BB King Paul Kossoff Dick Dale Dickie Betts Duane Allman Tony Iommi Tony Bourge

I'll add a few...
Ritchie Blackmore (at least his DP material) Carlos Santana (probably THE most distinctive) Roy Buchanan Johnny Winter Pete Townsend Stevie Ray Vaughan Tom Fogerty Neil Young (no one plays like Neil)

Well...
As much as I like Rush, I've never thought of Alex's playing like that. It almost seems like he's more like an orchestra than a guitar. Plus I guess I always listened to Geddy's bass playing more.
If you're talking Canadian guitar players I would suggest guys like Robbie Robertson, Jeff Healy, Colin James, Randy Bachman and Kim Mitchell too...

How could I forget Santana?
Remember now, you have to be able to pick them out from material that is not their mainstream
Robby Robertson is a good choice its distinct but could you tell Johnny Winter from Stevie Ray Vaughn, maybe from the type of music.
I'm talking instantly recognizable. I probably have to remove a few now that I think about it because some you dint hear out of their style, like Hendrix. but unlike Hendrix when you hear say Trower in Procol Harum- you know its Trower
Leslie West then and now needs to play one or 2 notes and you know its him
If you take Blackmore, then you have to take Clapton during his Cream days
This is not easy

Oh Vic, lets go back a bit -
What about Bo Diddly and Buddy Holly? And Scotty Moore?

How can I put this ; its like when you're not completely familiar with an artist's material and you hear a tune and you say "Isnt that ....
like I havent heard any of the new version of Queen till the other day and I knew it was Brian May & not from one of Queens classic tunes

I guess there's really only a few guitar players that I can recognise like that... It's a combination of style AND sound.
Carlos Santana Bo Diddly Brian May Toni Iommi Jimi Hendrix Jeff Healy Neil Young Jimmy Page Dave Gilmour
I'd have problems with Zal, Ronson, Robertson, Clapton and many more if I was unfamiliar with the material...

Neil young guitar solo's are unique,Check out the controlled noise solo on "Blowing in the wind" from the "weld" album and the 14 minute noisefest that is "like a hurricane"..........Superb. Lou Reed has a unique style also,he can make a "wrong " note sound like it belongs there.
Others i can instantly recognise are The Edge(capable guitarist who makes excellent use of effects, which is an instrument in itself)
Robert Fripp and his Frippertronics, very clever.
And of course ,the master..........Frank Zappa, His distinct soloing comes from using a coin instead of a plectrum,he twists it and turns it on edge to create false harmonics which he calls "smortz".

I'm very familiar with Neil's work. Check out his guitar on the tribute to Bob Dylan a few years ago - not him doing "All Along the Watchtower" (which is superb) but when they all played "Knockin on Heavens Door". God knows there were enough guitar players - Clapton, Woodie and Petty among them. Listen to him at around the four minute mark. Simple but powerful! LOL Mick Ronson had a the experience of working with Lou on the "Transformer" album. Was a bit exasperated because Lou's guitar was always out of tune even when recording... Forgot about Fripp! I'm familiar with his work with Eno and Bowie - yep, no one plays like him. Brian May used a coin too - some British coin that I forget what it was ... a 10p coin? Is that possible?

A 10p coin would be a bit on the big side ,i think it was an old sixpence When Bowie worked with Reeves Gabrels i think he was looking for a replacement for Adrian Belew, very similar styles.
Ronson ,although not particularly distinctive was a fluid melodic player.
Ian Hunter tells a story of when he and Mick Ronson worked on the bat out of hell sessions, mick would just stand there and stare whilst the backing track was playing. He would do it for an hour or more, not even touching is guitar then............out of the blue would come this blistering solo, Don't forget he also did all the vocal.string.brass and orchestral arrangements on transformer.
Not bad for a boy from hull.
His string arrangement on "boy" from Ian Hunters Debut solo album remains one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard.

Similarily Mr. Reed was suitably impressed with Ronsons arrangements on his "Perfect Day" from Transformer. The boy from Hull didn't want to wear makeup at first until Bowie told him how many girls he'd get. ;D
