My God that girl could sing..what a voice.

List? I wouldn't go there... might upset the Missus... Growing up in the sixties, I always like Dionne Warwick believe it or not! Do you know the way to San Jose...... but through the years these are some of my favourites - Janis Joplin, Maggie Bell, Nico, Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane period only please), The Wilson Sisters (of Heart)... some more recent - Liz Phair, Joan Osborne Nico's works are haunting and unforgettable. If you're not familiar with her, she used to sing with the Velvet Underground and went on to make many solo albums. Once considered the most beautiful woman in the world, she ended up tragically dieing of a drug overdose. ...with the Velvet Underground: And solo:

Ginnie;
I'm a fan of those you mention. Grace Slick(as you say, Jefferson Airplane period) , Janis Joplin and Maggie Bell in particular.
Joan Armatrading is also well worth a mention.
Big Mama Thornton anybody?:-

Geesh, so many people have done that song, I didn't know Lulu did too.
Actually I love it in the movie "To Sir With Love" when Lulu sings that song.

They tried SO hard to make Lulu sound as if she was from some kind of uppercrust background, they insisted on using her mother's maiden name AND her father's surname AND pronouncing the "Marie" as "Maaaarry" (rhyme with Barry) a la Gaelic - that did it for me!!!!!! Dusty was always sensational - well her vocals and eye make up were

Fontella Bass, Rescue Me, absolute classic, Bonnie Raitt singing anything, Joan Baez singing Joe Hill at Woodstock still makes the hair on the back of my neck rise. Alanis Morisette, troubled but good, can't leave out Madge, global superstar and for me the original Sugababes, quirky, original and talented as opposed to the "diet" sugababes that are now quite rightly disappearing down the plughole!!!
As for Lulu, heard a wee story about her a few years ago, it seems she is a bit of a diva and loves to make every buggers life a misery when she's on TV/stage etc, well she was alledgedly being nasty to all in the studio and seems to like nothing better than reducing someone to tears, so she was gonna be interviewed and then sing, so she was all "miked up" for the interview part and was being nasty to all and sundry and then had to go answer a call of nature, now suffice to say it wasn't a pee, and she had quite a lot of wind coz she still had her radio mike on and the sound guy played it through the speakers in the studio much to the amusement of all who the aforementioned Lulu had been giving a hard time, well it lifted the mood of all and Lulu was getting really ratty coz no-one was upset, they just laughed and walked away, i was told this by the lighting guy that was on the set that day, is it true, dunno, i hope so!!!
