I agree about looking at going onto the Solid Rock, it seemed a good place and pretty friendly. A few other people were there apart from me, PP and Peterb and they seemed to like it too. Yes, your right about the bar at the AT being an afterthought, Pete, but I think I was just (desperatly) clutching at straws with that idea!!

I agree that Gang Bang wasn't right and if there isn't a charity to benefit then we can't put the word charity into the mix. No function room at the Alexander Thomson. The bar is more of an after thought as well. It's okay for a drink to end the day but I wouldn't think it suitable tbh. What are the chances of the Admiral Bar again, if we know we get kicked out early we have time to plan something after? The Solid Rock must be open til a late hour that seemed a good place to go after. I'm sure that Missymama Mayhem said that Solid Rock had a venue facility and a projector......maybe if we START there we won't have to move to it - we'll already BE there!!
Names wise, I think we've probably had all the suggestions we're going to get now - unless YOU know otherwise - so, it's up to those 5 good men and true........name the name......it'll be a start

I remember when we were there in Feb the manager took Cavey to have a look at the room in the solid. The only problem was that it wasn't available on weekends (something like that)

I don't know what its like over there but... could you have it outside somewhere, like a park or something. I know we do that kind of thing over here when we have work picnics - in the middle of the summer, outside, combined picnic, games or whatever, with liquor and beer allowed, make sure you have access to a covered area for bad weather , people bring foods - salads, maybe barbecue, desserts, or better yet you sell the food at reasonable prices. if you can't get a band then pipe the grand music of the original SAHB through a sound system (maybe a DJ?), collect an entrance fee for charity, you could have tables set up with merchandise to raise money, some people can give speeches if they have good stories to tell (not too long!), encourage musicians to bring their acoustic instruments for singalong, if its "kid friendly" you could have Zal face painting, also Alex look a like contest, outside you can have stripey banners and flags blowing in the wind, people would bring their own lawnchairs for seating ( our parks usually have lots of picnic tables too), could start at noon and be over by eight or whatever... The first annual SAHB Charity Picnic?

The first annual SAHB Charity Picnic? That, my dearest Sir Gin, is the most perfectly enchanting notion - sadly, October is not the most clement month to be outdoors in Scotland and there's the risk of being over run by St Mirren football club fans who also favour black & white!!
Goodness only knows what level of planning would go into such an event, it's not something I've ever had to do but I suspect it would amount to more work than the traditional book a venue approach.

Im afraid and saddened to say Ginnie, that Alex was not as well known in Glasgow/Scotland/UK to attract a big enough crowd to make your ideas work, and as Catherine said, only in a more polite way than i can, it wid freeze the baws aff ye at that time o' year in a Glesga park ;D

Hi Folks Don't kno if this would be of any interest. Just came off the phone from a pub called Dow's (Dundas Street Glasgow, just across from Queen Street Station). They have a function area that holds up to 120 people (not all seated but a fair bit more than Ivory Blacks). The function area is available FREE (pending £50 deposit repayable a week after event provided no damage etc....just usual rules). Suitable for live music although they don't supply any equipment so that would have to be brought in. Available on Saturday (November dates free so far). Licensed till 12. I have asked if a later one could be arranged n he's goin to call me tomorrow to let me kno about that and any costs that would involve. The fella I spoke to is called Stewart. It was just a thot (meant to say...I've seen this place (Scottish Cartoon Club used to be held there) it's an open space, bands would play in alcoved area (easy enuf space for four piece band) and no problem with audience viewing. It's upstairs so function area is separate from public bar area. Dow's number is 0141 332 7935)

Was thru in Glasgow this morn so on way back to train station jumped in to Dow's to speak to Stewart. The deal would be a 1am license. Having spoken to this Guy in person I would say that the chances o being unceremoniously punted out the door (manhandled by a bouncer as was the case for at least one Lady in the admiral SS1) are slim. A 1am deal for a saturday night city centre function suite on a £50 deposit is pretty good going (if Your offered a better deal by someone else my advice would be .......marry them!!!) It is smaller than I remember but Yi can judge for Yourselves by the pics. The suite is upstairs. There is an adjoining door to the public bar downstairs but Stewart told me that it would be locked. Access to upstairs would therefor be via the function suite main door only. (At the risk o stating the obvious the function room has it's own bar and toilets) I wouldn't hang back too long if You're deciding to go for this one because I had a look at his booking list n this is a fairly busy place for private doo's.

I think it needs more pillars. This has only one and so can only accomodate one lurker and it has its own lurker already.
