Hmmmm..... I notice Slade are playing The Robin2 the week after SAHB on Dec 12th. I tried to get my better half interested but she wasn't at all keen... The conversation went something like: "Is Noddy singing?" "Of course not..." "Well, it isn't Slade then is it!" The Gig is actually Slade + Mud, neither band being near the original line up... It is presented aa a "Glam Night", sounds a bit 'tribute band' -ish to me! (No disrespect to "Spiders on Windowlene" ) Slade were the best band I ever saw live (I never saw the original sahb) - I'd hate to spoil that. But then, members do move on (and pass away...) What, in this regard, is the difference between SAHB and Slade? (I think maybe there might be a difference, but I'm interested to hear what people think...) So, have Slade become a tribute band to themselves? Discuss.

It's only Dave Hill & Don Powell left eh??
Slade where another of ma fave bands when I was younger....(so much younger), never saw them live but I don't think I'd go see them now. If Nod & Jim Lea came back i'd be there in a shot!!

It's only Dave Hill & Don Powell left eh?? Slade where another of ma fave bands when I was younger....(so much younger), never saw them live but I don't think I'd go see them now. If Nod & Jim Lea came back i'd be there in a shot!! Yep, Dave and Don with a new singer called Mal McNulty, who I haven't heard but alledgedly he sang for The Sweet for a while and was a member of a group called Paddy goes to Holyhead. He joined Slade in 2005 so he isn't that new, but all the Slade footage of the 'New' (none Noddy) Slade on Youtube that I can find has the previous singer, Steve Whalley. Can't find any McNulty stuff... John Berry plays bass, who was the bass player in Mud, who ironically are sharing the bill with Slade for most of the tour... I did see Slade in about 1979 or 1980 and they were FANTASTIC! They were a mind blowing live act. I'm not sure about now ('cause I haven't seen them...) but whilst my gut reaction is 'it won't be the same' - I am prepared to follow sahb around without Alex. Jim Lea has become a sort of musical hermit for 20years, but came out of self imposed retirement for just one live gig at the Robin 2 a few years ago. First and only time on stage with a band since Slade split. You can buy the bootleg of this off his site. www.jimleamusic.com/I have and it is amazing, not least because Jim plays GUITAR and sings all the vocals - and he certainly still has it As for Nod, the man is 61! Many rock singers of the 70s (Ian Gillan and Ian Anderson of Tull come to mind) have pretty much lost their voices and even those that can still sing tend to leave out all the screechy bits! Noddy was the ultimate screaming (bugger the vocal chords!) rock singer. Question is, can he still sing? If he can, would he sound anything like he did 35 years ago? I wonder if his reluctance to have anything to do with Slade again is because he knows he wouldn't be up to scratch? Just speculation on my part, I'd LOVE to be proved wrong!!! ;D vib

My Slade tale goes back to the glory days of the Glasgow Apollo and the big party that followed in what was then the awfully posh Albany hotel in Bothwell St - where all visiting top notch bands stayed (sadly now a rather down at heel Holiday Inn now) Unfortunately I have no recollection whether SAHB was supporting Slade or if Slade just happened to be in town at the time of the SAHB 3 night sellout sensation - anyway - my pal & I were at the gig (no real memory at all) and later at the party. All fine and good. Drinkies and nibbles, chatting to Mr Harvey senior etc etc - fun had by all - home to beddy byes, work on the Saturday morning Got to work - no sign of my pal.......last seen chatting animatedly to Dave Horrible Hairdo Hill.............no reply on her home phone.........I called the Albany......Mr Hill's room please.........she was still there!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We met up just a few weeks ago - her husband has no knowledge of her groupie experience and she smiles fondly and says of Dave "he was just a nice guy"!!!!!!!!!!

I called the Albany......Mr Hill's room please.........she was still there!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocking! Outrageous behavoir!!! Actually, Knowing Dave Hill, he probably spent all night explaininhg his Jehover's witness pamphlets to her I might also have a Dave Hill story, courtesy of my big sister. I need to speak to her about it again though, it has been many years since I heard it and I don't want to get the fact wrongs (he might sue for slander ) My Sis is ten years older than me so whilst I was a spotty youth a bit too wet behind the ears to see or do much in the 70s (early 70s, anyway) - my Sister was charging around in her afgan coat with my Brother-in-law in his grey mini in the late 60s and 70s visiting all the big festivals and seeing all the great bands I missed. They never saw sahb, though. Vib

I was so lucky to see both sahb and slade on the same bill too-it was about 72 when the sladists won some award and the gig was at the truly aweful Earls Court in London-The place was where they usually held exhibitions.Well both bands just turned up the volume and blasted the joint.Ged

Am off to the Slade concert in Croydon on Friday - never saw the original lineup but have seen subsequent ones and they've been excellent, they even went down a storm at the Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool in August.

You keep missing me! I'm touched! Although I've not really been away - well, other than for a few days. But, y'know how some members like to post loadsa stuff to get past the quota for a new star? Well, I kinda like being a 'junior member' - I don't want to get ideas above my station (I'm not worthy!!!) so I've been trying to ration myself to keep under the dreaded 100 posts... But, I still wonder if I've misunderstood the 'missing me' bit? I know I'm sometimes a bit slow on the uptake. ... (Thinks...) I know we only live about 2 miles apart... Hmmmm....and when I tried to cross the road the other day I'm SURE that car did accelerate at the pelican crossing [slow dawning of possible alternative intrepretation] Blimey!!! What car do you drive???!!!! [/slow dawning of possible alternative intrepretation] vib ;D
