Catherine told me that Mr Donaghey will send the recording on to the Tomahawk Kid because he has the facilities to transfer it onto CD, etc.

In "Classic Rock" magazine there is a picture of SAHB where Tommy Eyre is mentioned. The picture is NOT Tommy, but is John Martin who sat in for Hugh McKenna in 1973 when he was ill. John Martin played with SAHB on the BBC in concert session from 1973, "Faith Healer", "Midnight Moses", "Gang Bang", "Last Of The Teenage Idols" and "Giddy Up A Ding Dong."

I received a text from Stuart Donaghey yesterday evening and he has received the Soulband Ross-on-Wye disc safely. He will pass it on to the Tomahawk Kid, so hopefully you'll get to hear it soon.

Has anyone heard that acoustic version of "Billy Bolero" by Alex recorded in the early 80s? I've got it somewhere.

Yes, Jim gave it to me (Tomahawk Kid)...brilliant take on the song...TK has the best SAHB archive and is very kind for sharing it with us all.
The things i'd love to hear are all those American acetates...They often appear on the US market but have yet to make it onto fan-swap cd's. There are also people who think some of Alex' London Marquee recordings are out there...Sadly there's no evidence of this so far. (Apart from the John Peel Video Clips)
I think your tape is the most important recording to surface for a very long time.

Derek Wadsworth had a recording of Alex singing "Anarchy In The UK" at the London Palladium on Sunday 5th March 1978 with his new band. SAHB were filmed at the Rainbow Theatre in 1974 for broadcast in the USA, but only bits of this concert have surfaced over the years. I've never seen the full performance. On the subject of the Rainbow Theatre, the cover of "SAHB Stories" was photographed in the bar at the theatre. In 1965 Alex performed "Agent OO Soul" on a TV show called "Thank Your Lucky Stars" (presented by Brian Matthew). Alex was only miming to the song and was standing by a couple of dustbins!! The Soulband appeared on Scottish TV several times in the 60s, but I don't know if the tapes still exist.
As for my recording of the Soulband in Ross-on-Wye, I agree that it is an important and historic performance. I've had run-ins with record companies in the past and I don't want them to get their hands on this tape. I want the fans to have it, so it's been placed in the public domain.
There ARE earlier recordings of the Soulband that I'll tell you about sometime.

In 1966, Alex recorded a song called "Jamie's Away In The Tardis" for the Scottish actor Fraser Hines (who played the part of Jamie in "Doctor Who" with Patrick Troughton). Fraser's brother Ian played electric piano on the "Alex Harvey And His Soulband" Polydor LP. Although the album sleeve states that it was recorded live at the Top Ten Club, it is NOT a live recording. It was recorded at Polydor Studios, Hamburg (the applause was grafted onto it later by an engineer). Polydor didn't have a contract with the Top Ten Club to record live performances, so that's why it had to be faked. The record company even made Alex wear a tuxedo on the back of the sleeve to make him look more clean cut and changed his year of birth to 1939.

Thanks for all this new information Roadworm...Where have you been hiding all these years? Do you know why the original Soul Band LP has never been issued on CD? There is the Bear Family CD but it is different. I love the picture on the back sleeve, i think he's wearing it with a smile ha ha! Same goes for the Rock Workshop album CD, it is different to the lp? The CD features more Alex though. Regards the Hairband do you know if a record was ever issued called 'Alex Harvey Sings Songs From Hair' or is this just simply a journalist who forgot the title of 'Band On The Wagon' One other thing...During the Derek Wadsworth tape from 77 Alex tells him of the Booids recording and offers to play it for him...There is another tape which is generally refered to as the Booids Demo but i am convinced from the faint voices heard underneath that this is Alex playing Derek the tape. Were these 2 recordings originally on the same tape? Thanks for sharing you material...and as importantly, all this lost information.

There was no such album as "Alex Harvey Sings Songs From Hair." I think the LP they were referring to was "Hair Rave-Up" on 1969 Pye (Cat No: NSPL18314). Polydor aren't interested in releasing either the "Soulband" or "The Blues" LPs on CD. The Rock Workshop CD contains bonus tracks because the leader of the band, Ray Russell, found the extra tapes (some of them were hiding in his barn). There's another Rock Workshop LP called "The Very Last Time" which was also released on CD (bonus tracks by Alex).
I'm amused that the Derek Wadsworth interview has spread like a virus. Derek sent this to me on CD recordable in 2000 and told me I was the only person with a copy. I copied it for someone else and it soon got around!! As for "Booids", I think part of it was on the original CD that Derek sent me all those years ago. Derek recorded this interview in 1977 on cassette so the "Booids" track would've been on it as well. The interview was recorded at Derek's house on Gerard Road, Barnes, London. You can hear Alex lighting cigs and drinking cans of booze!!!

'The Blues' is available on Import cd, it's clearly just taken from a high grade copy of the record but it serves its purpose. I think it's about 15 pounds with postage from Germany. If you'd like a copy from it just say.
The Derek Wadsworth interview does remain rare, it's one of the hardest recordings to find....At least now we can credit you for providing it. Thanks.
A recording which i've found myself listening to over the past few days is a gig alex did on his 46th birthday, sadly his last...The crowd sing Happy Birthday for him and it's fitting for the present time.

You may be interested to know that Soulband bass player Jimmie Grimes appeared in the opening sequence of the Ken Loach film "My Name Is Joe." As the film starts, watch as the camera pans from left to right and stops on an old bloke with a craggy face - that's Jimmie!!!!

I thought you might be interested to know about the earliest Harvey recording. It exists on a 78rpm double sided acetate (Music Mastering Service label) from 1956, credited to Harvey & Casware. The tracks are "Since You Went Away" and "Boots And Saddles." Alex was into campfire singing at the time, so these tracks are no doubt early country & western pieces.

It's brilliant having all this new info...Thanks Roadworm, i have given you my Karma for the day.
Do you know who owns these recordings now? Might any of them ever see the light of day?
Would you be interested in writing up a record of all the recordings you know to exist? It would be a great thing to refer to for all us Alex Heads.
You are a star for letting us know all this...
