That book "Are Ye Dancin" - I can see it's Jimmie Grimes on the far left on bass. Looks like George McGowan on drums, Bill Patrick on saxophone. The black guy on the far right is probably Wally Stewart (Jamaican musician). I guess this picture was taken around 1959 at the very latest.

I've got a "Hair" theatre programme from 1970 which I will try to upload onto the website over the next few days.

[/img] Roadworm.......Thankyou for sharing your memories and info on Alex's early days...... What a shame you can't make The Palace tomorrow.......Jimmy Grimes, George McGowan and others will be there (Young Alex confirmed it with me earlier. ) I am so looking forward to hearing the Soulband recording playing out.....so will they. Most people on here know my 'Harvey Story', ........here is a photo I have of the 'camping songs' you mentioned in an earlier post. (The late) Charlie Casware (who taught me to play bass) was Alex's best mate (bestman at his wedding) and a neighbour of my parents. Charlie and Alex gave me many photos which I hope to share with people this weekend...... This is where it all began.....Charlie is playing guitar with Alex listening attentively ! Attachments:

Charlie was a nice bloke, and his wife Irene was a sweet lady, and she sadly died last year. I remember her saying to me "Oooh, that's a lovely Scouse accent you've got there."

The last time "No Complaints Department" was played by the BBC was in November 1977 on Alan Freeman's Saturday Show. I wrote a long article about the song on Wikipedia (see under "Rock Drill"). Hopefully Gideon will give some background information on the song before he plays it.

There is no page for Hugh, and the articles on SAHB, Ted , Chris and Zal are very sparse.

Roadworm, Do you know if the Hairband 7'' records differ from the album versions? Also, found a weird Dr Who page and Frazer Hines is looking for 'Jamie's Awa In The Tardis' too....Do you know if a copy exists? Thanks

The Hairband single "Big Louis" is a totally different version of the song to the one on the album. The band re-recorded the song, more perky and up-tempo, with extra guitar work, trombone and honky tonk piano. I've got a recording of the single somewhere and it sounds great. Alex's vocals are more fired up than on the album version.
Fraser Hines had an acetate of "Jamie's Away In The Tardis", but unfortunately he lost it. Aaarrrggghhh!!!

I have a single on 1970 CBS by HAIRPOWER called "Royal International Love-in" b/w "Dead End." Alex wrote and sings the A-Side, but he's disguising his voice - very amusing! As you may already know, Alex performed this song live with the Hairband on the "Hair" Rave-Up album at the Shaftesbury Theatre, London, 1969. The single is a studio version of the song.

Is there any difference between the single and album version of Jungle Jenny?
|
|
|
Post by roadworm on Feb 13, 2012 9:45:13 GMT
Yes. The version of "Jungle Jenny" on "The Penthouse Tapes" is a remix. The single version sounds a bit looser.
If you have a UK copy of "Giddy Up A Ding Dong", the B-Side "Buff's Bar Blues" is a remixed and slightly extended version. It sounds very raunchy compared to the version on "Framed."
